Dining Out Sustainably: Aquarelle

One of my favorite things about Austin is it's casual atmosphere.  You can show up in shorts and flip-flops almost anywhere and fit in.  But, there are times when you want something special, someplace classic with a little elegance and sophistication.  That's where Aquarelle comes in - a charming restaurant offering classic French cuisine just off of 6th Street (606 Rio Grande.)

I recently took advantage of Aquarelle's participation in Austin Restaurant Week to savor their delectable fare again.   While they always offer a three course prix fixe Menu Rapide for $35, their Austin Restaurant Week menu provides more options for the same price.

Aquarelle works with local farms as often as possible, and I was delighted to find a local dish, Countryside Farms Rabbit Popover with local greens and walnut cream, leading off the menu.  The appetizer was melt in your mouth delicious and I quickly vowed to add 30 minutes to my workout the next morning when I tasted the flaky, buttery dough.

Our party also enjoyed the Cauliflower Veloute, Loin of Venison and Boneless Breast of Duck.  In general, we found everything to be prepared nicely with layers of flavor in every bite; there were a lot of "yum" comments around the table.  Tyler said that the cauliflower in his Veloute was a little over roasted, but not enough to deter his enjoyment or keep him from finishing the bowl.

During the dessert, I had total order envy.  I opted for the Flourless Chocolate Cake which was lovely, but the guys got the Coffee Poached Pear with the Carmel Cake and I thought I was going to have to take their plates away to keep them from licking them clean.  I believe one of them uttered, "Oh, this is the winner!"  The coffee-infused pear partnered perfectly with the carmel cake and chocolate ganache and made you want to keep licking your fork to get the last drop of flavor.

Aquarelle is worth a visit anytime, but if you are budget minded you still have time to visit Aquarelle during Austin Restaurant Week as the event continues Sunday, 3/7 through Wednesday, 3/10.  You may also want to pay a visit to their wine bar as they offer a selection of small plate appetizers at very reasonable prices and, if you are there during Happy Hour (5-7 pm), they are half-off.   Viva La France indeed!

This post is perfect timing, b/c I was just walking past Aquarelle last night on my way to Ranch 616, and thought for the hundredth time "WHY have I never been there for dinner?!" There are so few great French spots in town, & that popover sounds worth a trip in itself. Or the coffee-poached pear for that matter. :)

I LIVE for Aquarelle. It's my go-to move in Austin (though I haven't, um, gone-to in a while). Love that there's a winebar now. Great post!
